Hamster Diet

Hamsters have a very straight forward diet but they always love a variety in their diet as well. The basics of a hamster diet comes in a bag and can be purchased at most pet shops, make sure you buy the correct type of hamster food and not a different speices such as rat food as your hamster could possibly choke on bigger chunks to the nutrition could be not correct for them.

You need to make sure your hamsters food source is fresh so you should get yourself into a routine to check it daily and your hamster will be happy. Its recommended to use a weighted food bowl as some hamsters like to throw their food about.

Hamsters come from the dry, rocky regions of the world so do not need a huge amount of fresh water but you should supply a source of fresh water for your hamster at all times. This is ensure they are hydrated well. More than 90% of hamster diseases will heal from them being well hyrated.

When in the wild hamsters will forage for fruits and vegetables. If you give your hamster some fruit and vegetables he will be grateful. As mentioned earlier hamsters love a variety in their diet so try out new fresh foods, some of the foods they love include; carrots, apples, bananas, sweet corn and especially grapes!

Most pet shops sell at least one kind of hamster treat including packets of dried fruits, yogurt drops and seeds. Treats like these are great for taming your hamster but remember with fresh fruit and treates never overfeed your hamster as you may flush him out and he may end up with diarrhoea.
