Hamster Care

Hamster care is important and caring for your hamster is important because it will give them good health and happiness. Hamsters are easy to care for compared to other pets and if you follow a simple routine your hamster will thrive in its environment and bring you much joy. Its true that your hamster will grow attached to you.

Daily Tasks

Everyday your hamster will need a source of fresh food and water. Before you feed your hamster you should check to make sure that the hamster does not already have a lot of food hidden in a different area. Hamsters sometimes take food to a secret hiding spot to save it. You should always refill your hamsters water bottle as it needs to be fresh. Water in time will build bacteria which is harmful for all pets.

Weekly Tasks

Once a week you should check the bedding and clean the cage. Sometimes hamsters can be potty trained and will go to the bathroom in the same spot. You need to spot clean that area. Place a fresh layer of bedding material on the floor of the cage where you cleaned and check over toys to make sure they are safe for your hamster to use.

Washing or Grooming

Hamsters are very clean animals, they can wash themselves and if you provide a bowl of sand they will clean out any grease from their coat, this mainly applies to dwarf hamsters. If you have a long haired hamster you may be required to brush it to get it untangled or get shavings out, the best tool is a toothbrush for doing this.

Teeth and Nails

Hamsters teeth are kept healthy if you give them gnawing blocks or gnawing materials. If you notice dribbling and struggling to eat your hamsters most probably suffering from overgrown teeth, you may need to see a vet to get them sized down. Its important to avoid this by stopping by a pet store from time to time to purchase favored wood for them to chew on.

Hamster nails grow throughout their life so check them to ensure they aren't too long. This shouldn't occur often as hamsters nails wear down when running around.
